Cruise Ship and Venice.

Cruise Ship and Venice is a short video I took on the front at St Marks. I was there early one morning to see the sunrise but sadly cloud cover made that impossible, so instead I became aware the MSC Lirica was dur to dock in Venice shortly so hung around to film it's passage up the Venetian Lagoon towards the port. I must admit it was quite a site and I would have loved to have filmed Venice from the deck of the ship.

The Lirica entered service in 2003 and cost $250 million to build, and can carry up to 2600 passengers.  This was filmed on the 2nd November 2018 using a Nikon d3300 SLR camera. It can be viewed here and on YouTube.

Walker Pit, Halifax

Paid for by Anne Lister and named after her partner Ann Walker, the pit was dug by John Mann in 1835 to supply coal to Shibden Hall and the nearby area. The pit was also known as Miss Lister's Mine and was subject to some dispute with nearby colliery owner Christopher Rawson. The ornate ventilation shaft is all that remains of the pit.

It is passed whilst walking along the path that leads up from Shibden Park to the top of Beacon Hill, which overlooks the town of Halifax.

There are 2 set of pictures taken around the tower by me.

The first set shown below was taken on the 1st June 2014 using a Polaroid is2132 bridge camera.

On this occasion i'd never heard of Walker pit and thought that the tower was part of the ventilation for the Beacon Hill railway tunnel that runs beneath the ground here.

I was passing by again in August 2018 and took the following pictures of the tower, it was largely covered by the hedges that run alongside the path at this time. The tower itself is on private land and I understand the landowner would rather have people keep away from it, which is understandable.

Settle Railway Station.

Settle Railway Station serves the North Yorkshire market town at the southern point of the famous Settle to Carlisle Railway through Northern England. The station is the 2nd station to carry the name, the first being the current Giggleswick stop which opened in 1849, it is approx. a mile to the west of Settle centre. When Settle station opened on the 1st May 1876, It was called Settle New Station and the original one became Settle old before becoming Giggleswick in November 1877, at the same time Settle New removed the new from the title.

The station is staffed part time and has a limited number of facilities. That platforms were connected by a barrow crossing at the northern end of the platforms, this was replaced by a bridge in 1993. The bridge was taken from Drem Railway Station, East Lothian when the line had been upgraded to electric making the bridge defunct. It looks like the bridge has always been there in my opinion. The old barrow crossing is still used by station staff and wheelchair users. The station gained Grade II listed status in March 1984 and the station signal box which closed also in 1984 has been restored by the Friends of the Settle - Carlisle line.

The pictures were taken on the 23rd August 2016 using a Nikon d3300 SLR camera, they can be seen below or un-watermarked on Clickasnap.

Cross Stone (St Pauls) Church, Todmorden.

Cross Stone Church also known as St Pauls is a defunct church overlooking the town of Todmorden, West Yorkshire. Built in 1832 replacing earlier churches that have stood on the site since at least 1450, continuing to be used as a place of worship until 1978 when the building was declared unsafe and was said to be sliding down the hill.

When Todmorden was the boundary between Yorkshire and Lancashire St Pauls served the Yorkshire community with St Mary's Church serving Lancashire. Since Boundary changes in 1888 the town has wholly been part of Yorkshire. The church has had the cock face removed and offers quite a spooky setting on some of the lower walls. There are a set of stocks built in to the east wall, now part of a wild garden.

I had passed the church many times along the main Calder Valley road and the Rochdale Canal and had always meant to visit, I didn't realise it was closed and privately owned until I got the chance on 22nd April 2017. I took the pictures using a Nikon d3300 SLR camera they can be seen below and on Clickasnap where they are un-watermarked.

Venice. 29 October 2018

Day 1 is a set of pictures taken in and around Venice, Italy on Monday 29th October 2018. On the day we arrived Venice was hit by some of the worst flooding in over a decade reaching almost 3 foot deep in places, especially around the St Marks Square area. These pictures were taken around the airport and hotel areas as they were the only areas reachable on the first day.

They were taken using either my Sony phone, Amazon tablet or Nikon d330 SLR camera. The pictures can be seen below or on Clickasnap where they are full size, resolution and un-watermarked.

Taken at the Venice airport boat moorings waiting for my transfer to the city.

This was my first proper land based view of Venice, taken from the boat landing area near
St Marks Square looking across the water to the church of San Giorgio Maggiore.

Looking down from my hotel room at San Marco Palace to the flooded courtyard below.

Flooding outside Doge's Palace at the entrance to St Mark's Square. The water got deeper than
this crossing the square, reaching chest height on me before I successfully reached my hotel.

The hotel steps.

I took this shortly after take off from Manchester Airport looking out across the Peak
District. The sun had not long since risen. At a guess I think the plane would have been
somewhere between Marple Bridge and New Mills.

The Hotel Steps again, looking up towards the sky light.

Looking down towards the Alps Mountain range somewhere near the borders of Switzerland,
Liechtenstein, Austria and Italy.

The rooftops of Venice viewed from my hotel room at San Marco Palace.

Vintage Railway Posters of the World.

Currently sorting through my collection of images that I have acquired over the years trying to find stuff to do with them and found over 200 vintage railway posters. I have taken an initial 26 from them and turned them in to a slideshow - video, which can now be viewed both here and on YouTube. The posters are mainly from the United Kingdom but there are also posters from other parts of the world.

I purchased many of my images copyright free and as far as I am aware that is the case with these. if I am misinformed I will remove them if asked by the copyright holder.

Raphael Kirchner.. Pin Ups and Vintage Girls.

I have recently acquired a collection of what i am told are copyright free pictures and was at a loss with what to do with them, they feature old travel posters, autographs, pin up girls from various artists, Victorian erotica and celebrities. It felt a bit of a waste to just have them sat around doing nothing so I took 30 pictures from the Raphael Kirchner collection and turned them in to a short slideshow - video for YouTube, which can also be viewed here.

Raphael Kirchner was an Austrian artist born on May 5th 1875, who produced over a thousand paintings and drawings in what was a relatively short life, he lived until August 2nd 1917 dying at just 42 years old.

Stairs, Hotel San Marco Palace, Venice.

Whilst in Venice I stayed at the San Marco Palace Hotel, this post is not a review of the hotel, it is to show 2 pictures I took of the staircase at the hotel which was absolutely fantastic. Like most things in Venice it appeared to have been marble (It looked it to me but I have no idea) and formed a fantastic centre piece to the part of the hotel we were staying in. As I have already said this is not a review but I was very happy with the hotel, it was clean and the staff were always helpful and pleasant. I would happily recommend it as a place to stay.

The pictures were taken using my Sony Experia phone and can be seen below and on Clickasnap full size, resolution and un-watermarked.

Through a Glass, Darkly: Hebden Bridge Railway Station in Negative

There's something hauntingly beautiful about old photographs, especially when they're presented in a way that flips our perception....
